Have you ever held off on needed repairs or upgrades because you didn’t know who to call? Or have you wondered if the service technician who comes to repair your heating or cooling system really knows what he’s doing? Sometimes it’s hard to know who to trust with your expensive home comfort system. However, all you need to look for is four important letters: NATE. When you have a NATE-certified technician working for you, you know you can rely on him to get the job done right.

NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence, which is a non-profit organization that provides certification for HVACR (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration) technicians. The NATE program provides technicians in the HVACR industry with examinations that allow them to prove their knowledge and skills in the installation, maintenance and repair of HVACR systems. NATE is the only HVACR certification organization that is created, funded and regulated by professionals within the industry itself.

To become a NATE-certified technician, two exams are required. The first is a core exam that tests general HVAC knowledge and skills, additional HVACR knowledge, and overall construction knowledge. The second is a specialty exam that covers either installation, repair or maintenance. NATE certification exams are designed by industry experts to test real-world understanding and skills.

Once the exams are passed, a NATE-certified technician is required to gain continuing education credits in order to maintain certification. This ensures that your technician will be up-to-date on all the latest advances in HVACR technology.

As a customer, you want to know that the service technicians who work on your heating and cooling units know what they’re doing. Poorly installed and serviced equipment doesn’t run as efficiently, leading to higher utility bills. It also breaks down more frequently, leaving you with costly repair bills or the need to replace the equipment before you normally would. NATE certification is proof that the technician has met the standards of knowledge set by experts in the industry, so you can rest assured that your expensive equipment is in the best hands.
