Do Solar Water Heating Savings Interest You? Why Florida’s Got an Edge

Have you considered a solar water heating system for your Central Florida home? Water heating is one of the most economical applications of solar energy. Ideally suited to our warm climate, solar water heating will save you ample money on your monthly utility bills. And as a bonus, federal energy tax credits may help pay for your qualified system.

A solar water heater transfers heat collected by panels mounted on your roof or in your yard to a water storage tank in your attic, garage or utility room. Solar water heating can be your sole source of hot water, or it can be used to preheat the water in your conventional water heater. Either way, using energy from the sun to heat your water you will reduce your monthly energy bills.

Legislation signed by President Obama on Jan. 2, 2013 extended federal energy tax credits to the end of the year. Depending upon your personal tax situation, you may be able to claim a credit of 30 percent of the cost of your solar water heater. Check with you local utility to see if it offers any additional incentives for energy-saving investments in your home.

Florida is an ideal place for using solar energy for heating water and generating electricity. Our southern latitude means the sun stays high in the sky for much of the year, and our climate offers plenty of sunny days for collecting solar energy. In fact, solar water heaters were common in Florida as long ago as the 1930s, before inexpensive natural gas was piped into the state.
